Ceremony Planning questions

So, you ladies who are planning or have already gone through their ceremony, I have some ceremony planning questions.

When we booked our church, the pastor gave us a Marriage Document. Since my wedding is October 7, I've been going through it to try to figure out what format etc that I want things. Most of it seems straight forward. But I'm particularly confused by the Readings/Responses component. I get what a reading is, but WTF is meant by the RESPONSE?? My package has it laid out as as such:

Responses
Sermon
Hymn of the Day

???? WHAT? A SERMON?? A HYMN??? YIPES!!! How many "Readings" can I have, and how/what are the "responses?" and WTF is the SERMON all about??

I may just being a panicy stressed bride, but I'm worrying about this. I know that my pastor can answer these questions, but I don't want to bug him yet, until I have a better handle on what I want from the ceremony.

Besides it'll be nice to chat with people who've gone or are going through this.

So, I recently had some major changes happen in my wedding party. In May, the girl who was supposed to be my MdOH started a new job in a town a few hours north of me...And ever since, she's virtually fallen off of the face of the earth. I had to track down her phone number via her parents who live in a smaller nearby town to the town she's in. Geesh!! Anyway, when I FINALLY got ahold of her, she seemed put out to talk to me (to be fair, I think I'd just woken her up from a nap on her couch). Anyhoo, I'd told her I'd call her back in a few days to get her address, cause we were planning on doing up the invites soon. Well, when I DO call back, there's no answer...so I leave a babbling message. In the meantime, my MtOH (who lives in the same city as I do) has been trying to get ahold of her to finalize things for my Shower & Stagette. Another week or more goes by, and I start trying to get ahold her too. In discussions with my Future MIL, we realize we might need to give her the out...it seems she's not able/willing to be available anymore. So, I FINALLY get ahold her, and she says just that, that she thinks I should proceed without her. (With her new job, she's working 9-10 hours days with no extra time/energy). I confirm with her that she's asking to be set free. She apologizes and says yes. I tell her that I'd kinda figured that's where things were gonna lead. I mention that I'm planning on asking my friend Erika (whom I've been friends with since grade 10). She agrees that she'll do a great job. I ask her if I can come that weekend to grab the dress...she says her place isn't fit for company, can she please have more time to clean...I tell her I'll need to check my future MIL's schedule, as she's likely the one who'll be driving.

So I get off the phone with her and call my friend, Erika. I tell her that Susan isn't going to be able to be my MdOH anymore. She's appropriately sympathetic and such. I ask her if she'd be my MdOH. She cries when I ask her, and graciously accepts. We talk about what she'll have to pay for and such. She's excited and overjoyed. (I'm kind of annoyed at myself that I didn't just ask her last year to begin with!!)

Anyway, it occurs to me a day or so later, that I don't actually need to go to Susan's place, as the dress is at her Parents place (in the nearby town), so all I need to do is stop in at her parents place, leave a check for her, and grab the dress. So I leave a message as such. She calls me back and says that won't work either...her parents are busy/gone all weekend, her brother and SIL are gone, and she's busy the whole weekend. GRR!! I say I have to check my future MIL's schedule.

Anyway, here I am, almost 3 weeks later, and still no definitive plans on getting the dress back. My new MdOH needs to try it on, and she's bigger than Susan, so we need to see how much might need to be added on to make it work (if any!). She's just joined a gym, so that, combined with suck em in undergarments, might be all that is needed for the dress to fit her properly.

My fiancee and future in-laws today said I'm being WAYY too accomodating to Susan, that she needs to be more accomodating to me. I realize they're right. So, tomorrow night I'm gonna phone her again, and tell her (even if I have to leave it in a message) that we're planning on coming on July 30 (Sunday) to get the dress from her parents place. Susan doesn't need to be there, she just needs to make sure they know we're coming (and if not, I'll call them myself), and we'll just leave the check with her parents.

There's now less than 3 months till my wedding. I don't have time to dick around with things. My MdOH needs her dress! And if we're not going to be able to get it from Susan pretty darn quick, then we need to order another one in, and I don't know how long that would take! If this isn't figured out VERY soon, I'm going to turn into BRIDEZILLA!!

Anyway, I just wanted to share my wedding woes and adventures. I hope everyone else is having a better time of things right now.

FINALLY A COLLEGE GRADUATE!!!!

I know I haven't updated in like forever. I figure this is a good opportunity to do so.

Well, it's official....I'm FINALLY a college graduate!!! WOOT! My convocation was June 2. I'm the FIRST, and so far ONLY of my sibs to actually graduate college, so it's a big deal to me.

Here are some professional grad portraits I got done by my wedding photographer.

These were all done the week before my grad. My fiancee and I went to our photographer's house (where he has a studio) and got these done, as well as some engagement photos. (see my next LJ post for those). I'd gotten my hair dyed and cut earlier in the week, and the morning of photo day, I got my make-up done by my wedding makeup artist, and my hair styled by my wedding hair stylist.

My Convocation Adventure
My convocation was at 2pm on Fri, June 2. My mom came into town the night before. The morning of my convocation, my mommy and I were booked into pampering/beauty appointments at Marvel College (it's a beauty school-everything is done by students, so it's MEGA cheaper...it's also MEGA long process.)We both got manicures, pedicures, makeup, and hairstyles. The morning started at 9am, with mani's and pedi's...then we got makeup done. Then we had to go down to the hair salon for our hairstyles. By this time, time was running short...My 2 girlfriends, Meridith & Erika, had arrived at my house for my convocation (they'd driven early that morning from 3ish hours away to come see me walk across the stage-also for an engagement party being thrown by John's family on Sunday afternoon). Anyway, the lady that did my hair did it superfast...luckily I knew what I wanted! After the grad portraits I'd had taken the weekend before, I was IN LOVE with my hair in curls!

John picked my mom and I up Downtown near Marvel, and we carpooled with Erika & Meridith to the college. I already had my grad robe, hat and parchment in our car; John and I had picked them earlier in the week, and I'd hung my outfit up with my grad regalia, so John grabbed them all when he put it all in the car. At the college, we found parking, then we headed in. We were meeting my friend Kate at security, luckily was already there, as she'd accidentally arrived MEGA ealry. (Kate graduates in a few years from the University here. She's awesomely talented, and has agreed to make some beaded bags for Meridith & Erika, who are both mega involved in my wedding. Meridith is our MC, and Erika is wedding helper extraordinaire!)After we met up with Kate, and introductions were done, we headed to the triple gym, where convocation was held. I had to change into my grad outfit, and my cap and gown, so Erika and I headed to the washroom to get me changed. My mom bought me some roses while I was changing. Then I had to head to the smaller gym to line up with the other graduants, and my fan club headed and found seats.

During convocation, we had this lady babble about the award or whatever she got...I felt like standing up and doing laps around the chairs...she was so boring and annoying! Finally she stopped talking about herself and convocation commenced. I'm proud to say that I didn't fall when I was walking across the stage or anything of the sort. I didn't trip and kill, maim or injure the MRC prez. I remembered to breath. LMAO. Always a fear! However, I was REALLY nervous...in fact, just before I hugged him, my teacher Brian Guthrie, (who was in the receiving line)laughed at me and said I looked really nervous. When I got to the end of greeting the faculty, one of the guidance counsellors, Sonya, came up and gave me congrats and a hug.

After convocation, we took pictures, and then Kate had to head home. Meridith & Erika and my mom were already planning to stay for the weekend for the engagement party that was happening on Sunday, so after I returned my grad robe and collar/scarf thingy, (minus my hat and parchment because they're mine to keep!)we all headed back to mine and John's place. We had tons of food waiting for us. We'd pre-ordered some platters and trays from Costco, and while my mom and I were being pampered, John had gone and picked them up. We had croissant sandwiches (OMG those are good!), an ENORMOUS shrimp platter, and I believe a veggie platter. John's sister Bev (my Matron of Honor)and her hubby Don (John's groomsman) popped in with a card and a little gift for me. They weren't able to come to my convocaiton. Then his parents (who also weren't able to go to my convocation) stopped by with a bottle of Zinfandel and congrats. It was a fun-filled, LONG, and surreal day.

I FOUND A FULL TIME JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, I found a fulltime job. It's at a Daycare in my neck of the woods. Though it's not DIRECTLY in my field of study (social work), I firmly believe it could LEAD to further opportunities that are moreso in my field. It will give me CURRENT and relevant experience working with kids, so that if/when I want to try to get into an agency that deals with kids/families, I'll have CURRENT child related experience.

All of my child care skills are from 10-12 years ago. In 1995-1996 I worked in a Daycare in Sherwood Park. It was actually NOT a good daycare, and the experience has tainted my opinions of daycares ever since. So, I'm PRAYING that this Daycare experience will be A LOT more rewarding and fulfilling for me. When I moved to Calgary in 1996, I Nannied (for 2 families) for a year. I enjoyed being a Nanny WAY more than working in a Daycare.

Anyway, so I start my new job tomorrow. I work 8:30am-5:30pm I'm ECSTATIC that I"ll be working Fulltime. But I'm NOT happy about the hourly wage. It's REALLY sucky. :( *sigh* But, it's full time, and it's NOT forever, and it'll open up opportunities for me.

Anyway, that being said, I need to get my ass to bed so that I can get some sleep for my LONG day tomorrow.

Engagement Party

Hello everyone,
So, I have a few questions about an engagement party. What is the purpose of it? WHO attends it? Who gets invited to it? Can you have more than one? (for instance, in different cities).

My wedding is in October, and my future in-laws want to have an engagement party (here in our city) in early June. So, now I'm wondering if I should arrange something in the city where my family/friends (some are involved in my wedding) reside?

I'm thoroughly confused. Can you all help me??

question about inviations and save the date cards

so ladies...I've got a question. Actually I guess it's a few questions.
My wedding is in October this year. So what I'm wondering is: 1) When should I send out my invitations? (I was thinking probably June or July-am I right on that?) 2) Do I have to send save the date cards to people? (and if we do, how far ahead should they be sent?) We've pretty much contacted people via email and phone and in person to let them know about our wedding date.
